Paul’s Last Words

epitaph

What do you want your epitaph to say? Have you ever thought about it? If not, I’d suggest that you do. The way we learn how to live our best life is by thinking from the perspective of death. What do you want said about the summation of your life? Once you decide this, it will define how you live today.

Here is what Paul wanted us to remember about his life, according to Acts Chapter 20. I think it’s a prime example of the way we ought to live in order that one day, we too, might look into the eyes of the Creator of the Universe and hear, “Well done, my good and faithful servant…” (Matthew 25:21)

1. I have been faithful to do what Jesus told me to do. (v. 24)

2. I told the truth. (v. 20, 27)

3. I directed people’s attention towards Jesus and not towards me. (v. 19)

4. I finished Strong. (v. 24)

5. I gave more than I took. (v. 33, 35)

If you die tomorrow, what will your epitaph say? Think about it.

A Story of Redemption and Experiencing God’s Grace

Redemption

1 Peter 5:10 “And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you.”

I have suffered for a while. These past two years have been the most difficult times of my life, with one thing piling upon another. I wondered when I would see the light. But perhaps most importantly, I never doubted that this light would come. I never doubted God’s love for me and His goodness. I knew He had a plan and purpose for everything that was/is happening to me and I never stopped trusting Him. Probably clinging to Him tighter now, than ever before. Exactly, how He likes it- completely, wholly, even desperately dependent on Him.

This is a story about my restoration, about the light returning to my life. It is a joyful story and certainly not a complete one. But more importantly, this is a story about God and His grace, which never fails.

It was the Thursday night before I was scheduled to film my debut music video that Saturday. After a frustrating week of nagging my producer for details with no feedback, I was having a breakdown. I was furious. The shoot was Saturday and I had planned my whole week around it. The producer wasn’t holding up his end of the bargain. Where were the location lists, call times, wardrobe, crew names ect? Even if he sent me this information on Friday, I didn’t feel that one day was sufficient time for me to prep. I wanted to call him and scream at him! But can I? Is it right for me to bring my emotions into a work relationship? How much power and say do I really have in the matter? If I tell him how I feel, what will be his reaction? Will it change anything about the situation? Would it be worth it? If I don’t tell him how I feel, am I disrespecting myself? My feelings? Am I undermining our relationship and the honest, open communication that forms its base? These were all questions that were tormenting me that Thursday night. I struggled with them even as I fell asleep. I don’t like confrontation. I don’t want to confront him.

Friday morning, I had a meeting with my therapist. As usual, she asks me if there’s anything I want to talk about. I couldn’t think of anything “serious” that I felt I needed to talk to her about but because this music video situation was still on the forefront of my mind, I decided to give her a briefing of it. I figured at the least, she would be a good ear for me to get it off my chest. Maybe she would have some good advice on it, too. Boy, did I underestimate how God planned to use this frustrating situation and my time with the therapist that morning to work in miraculous ways.

Long story short, the therapist and I spend the hour “working” on the situation. We end up clarifying and defining my fear of confrontation as the root for why this situation was causing me such distress. Further, we even pinpointed specific events from my years in elementary school as stems for this irrational fear, which all revolve around my being unjustly shamed.

My fear, then, was not just a fear of confrontation, though it was that too. It was more a fear of being shamed. A fear of people making a big deal out of something in response to my actions. All it took was my pinpointing this fear, defining it, finding the cause of it, and rectifying that event within myself.

Before I knew it, the fear and anxiety was gone. By the time the session ended, I was no longer tormented with questions of what to do in response to my producer’s lack of follow through. I was eager to call him! Not to yell or vent but simply to talk about the next steps. It is what it is, I thought. And this is no confrontation. He and I will work this out and I’m excited to see when we can reschedule and start preparing for the new shoot date. Done and done. No anxiety. No fear. Suddenly, it wasn’t a big deal at all anymore. It was almost laughable that I let it torment me to begin with… It was never that big of a situation that I should lose sleep over it.

A huge weight was lifted from within me that Friday. Surely a day I will always remember and a blessing for which I’m indescribably grateful. The very thing I perceived as a mess the night before, had suddenly become a treasure to me, because it helped me to grow and to heal a part of me that had been carrying this burden of shame deep inside. Is God amazing or what?!

I share this story today in hopes that one of you, my readers, will relate to it. If you are feeling frustrated, anxious, or scared, I urge you to seek the cause behind those feelings within yourself. Everything you need to move forward awaits inside of you. God will take care of the details.

Conversations with God – Zephaniah 3:17

February 18, 2013

It is written, “The Lord your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exalt over you with loud singing.” Zephaniah 3:17. My sweet precious one, I am so glad you have once again sat before me, quiet in my presence. I’ve been yearning to speak with you. First, I am proud of you. I am SO proud of you and I LOVE you! I AM IN LOVE WITH YOU! Don’t let your heart grow faint. I am with you. I have always been and will always be. Do I not know the desires of your heart? Have I not seen your hard work and years of toil? Will I not reward you for this more than you can even imagine? Remember my lamb, your reward is heaven. That is the greatest reward of all and it is already yours. Fix your eyes on heaven and your heavenly reward. It is already here, already yours. While on Earth, continue to work for me, as you are called to do. Do not get sidetracked with what if’s and questions of your earthly rewards or gains. I handle all what ifs and earthly rewards are a mere mille-fraction of what awaits you in heaven. So, my precious one, be at rest. Relax in knowing that I care for you. Cast your burden onto me. You don’t know nor understand how you are already working for me in your daily life. But I do. Love yourself for what you’ve done so far. You are strong and I am proud. Stay where you are, you are just where I want you to be. Here, with me. Seeking me. Looking for me. Speaking with me. I long for this even more so than you do. Take things one day at a time. Aware of me and my presence and my working within you. I am always working within you. The things I have planned for you are great. Good things, which will make your heart glad. I am preparing you how to receive these things just as everything in you life up to this point has prepared you. You are well equipped, my soldier. You are ready. Don’t forget me as you discuss your future. Remember, it is my future, after all. I don’t make mistakes. Trust in me, little one. I placed dreams deep into your heart for a reason. And I didn’t give you these dreams without any intent on fulfilling them. Keep your faith, my child. Stay close to me. Rest in my presence. We have some exciting dream fulfilling adventures just around the corner and you’re more ready and able than you have ever been before. I love you. Let’s do this more often.

Conversations with God – Matthew 28:18-20

June 8, 2012

It is written, “And Jesus came and said to them, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been give to me. Go therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age’.” Matthew 28:18-20. Your single most important goal in life must be to praise me and to witness to others, to tell others of my works within you and in your life. All other goals pale in comparison. I have gifted you and I’ve given you the tools to use these gifts. I’m working detailedly in your life every day to prepare you to give this gift back to me. To use this gift as I intended, to your greatest ability through me, to your widest reach, to mine, which is global. Are you ready? Do not fret, my child. Remember that I have also told you, “I have power and authority over all things in heaven and on Earth.” With me, you are ready. In my time, you are ready. Through me, you are able. So when you get there, you will proclaim to all those who ask how, that I exist and that my love endures forever. My grace is incomparable.

Conversations with God – John 15:26-27

June 7, 2012

It is written, “When the Counselor comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, he will testify about me. And you also must testify, for you have been with me from the beginning.” John 15: 26-27. You have seen, I speak through you. I am using you. I have chosen you! The Counselor, the spirit who lives inside of you and I in him will testify for me, through you. When you notice something comes from you that does not seem from you and is on my behalf, it is from me, through the Counselor. You will have profound things to say, wisdom beyond your years, melodies and sounds that come from heaven itself. But you must not take credit for them. They are not from you. Therefore, when the Counselor comes to you and testifies about me, you may feel taken aback but you must qualify his statements. You must qualify his testimony. You must qualify me. For who are you, apart from me?

Don’t Trust Your Eyes

If the “human mind is the most deceitful of all things” (Jeremiah 17:9), then perception is the great deception.

Conversations with God – Psalm 37:4

June 4, 2012

It is written, “Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart.” Psalm 37:4. Too often you stress yourself my love, my little one, my lamb. You are striving for perfection in an imperfect world. You will only find perfection in me. Rather than seeking it in your career, relationships, or even yourself, instead draw closer to me. In my presence, you will find it. Your desire for perfection will only be satisfied in me. Let this be your ultimate, constant, and unwavering desire to get closer and closer to me. To sit quietly in my presence, every morning, as soon as you open your eyes and before you begin your day. This way, I may satisfy your yearning for perfection. That in my presence, you might feel it, and go forth in your day no longer trying to achieve it, but rather being constantly aware of it; of me. I love you.

Confide in God

“Trust him at all times, you people. Pour out your hearts in his presence. God is our refuge.” Psalm 62:8
