Passion is Our Purpose

This is one of my absolute favorite quotes from Mother Teresa. It reminds me of Howard Thurman when he wrote, “Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.”

The message in both is plain and clear. Passion is our purpose. Figure out what you love and do it as often as you can. Then share it with as many people as you can. So that they may be inspired to find and follow their own passion.

A Poem Inspired by The Book of Ecclesiastes

Neither the wise nor the fool
Will be remembered for long,
Since both will be forgotten
In the days to come.

Both the wise and the foolish
We all will one day die.
Everything seems pointless
Like catching wind from the sky.

It’s easy to fall into a pit
Of deep and dark despair.
We work so hard, then pass away.
So why should we even care?

We can fill our days with pleasure
Make achievements of every kind
Then get drunk off wine and wonder
What it takes to quiet our mind.

Yes, even this seems pointless,
When we step back and look away.
Spend enough time pondering it
We end up on our knees to pray.

Alas! It’s this! Our purpose is here.
In Him, we find it all more clear.
He came with meaning after the fall.
Now life’s not so pointless after all.

Our Calling

What are you doing when you feel most alive? Have you ever experienced a moment when life seems to slow down, almost to the point of stopping? Were you in the middle of some activity and hours passed by without you even noticing? Whatever it is that you were doing, that is your calling. We’re all called. We were all created with a unique purpose. The problem is most people spend their lives trying to find it or busying themselves so as not to think about it. But if you remember a time where life slowed down, time passed without you knowing, and you felt so energized that a cup of coffee never even crossed your mind…then you’ve already found your calling. Whatever you were doing in that moment, that’s it.
