A Description of Creativity
When Einstein was asked how he made his great discoveries, he said, “by using the imagination.” Creativity, then, could be described as using the imagination to move forward. This is something that we all do, all the time. In other words, we are all creative.
There are two generally accepted forms of creativity:
1. Creating something from nothing
2. Giving a new character to something
Of the two, I personally prefer the second. ‘Giving birth’ to something is often too violent. I prefer to think of it as ‘giving life’ because the process is incremental. Creativity is most often slow work, even though an idea does sneak up on us every now and then. But in general, everything is based on something else. Very little is completely new. From the moment we are born, we are bombarded with experiences which ultimately inform our creativity.
Distinguishing Between Spirit and Will
When faced with a choice, for example to stay or to go, listen to yourself. You can usually distinguish a spiritually inspired idea from a will-driven or ego-driven idea by how quiet your head is whenever you think about it. The spirit’s voice is quiet yet strong.
Assignment for Today: Allow Yourself to be Startled by Life
Control, which is only an illusion, is over rated. Life has much better ideas for us than we could ever imagine for ourselves.

The Tragedy of Art
Too often artists begin to perceive their work as a product of their own intellect; forgetting that the mind is the great deceiver and that creativity is in fact a gift entrusted to the artist. Suddenly and inevitably, the work becomes more about the ego and less about the art itself, changing the person from an artist to an egomaniac. In my opinion, this is the most common danger faced by the artist of today and also the greatest tragedy of art.
